You know the story, you apply for a job and get a phone call from a recruitment consultant asking you to come in and register. You then go in and they don’t mention the job at all, does everyone else get this. Whats the best way to decline but still get them to find work for you? Is it worth the effort of having to go in to get in with them or not? Any consultants opinion?

Yes..you need to register and get tested. They need to see what skills you have to send you out on interviews.

I had that happen to me more times than I care to recall. They place ads in the paper to “hook” resumes, then call everybody in for skills testing to get you signed up. The excuse they give you, if you ask about the job they advertised, is “well, you don’t as much education as they want.” or “well, they really wanted someone with more experience in the “_____” field, but we have some other jobs coming in daily that I would love to submit your resume for.” I doubt that most of the ads placed are bogus.
As far as them getting you jobs or interviews, that won’t happen unless you go in and meet with the recruiter. They will skill test you to make sure that you have the computer experience, typing speed, accounting knowledge or what ever field you are looking at before they will submit you to a client. Some will even do the background check and drug test on you before submitting your resume around. (The agencies we use do the pre-screening and certify the results)
I did get some interviews, and even a solid job offer one time. But I also ran in to situations where I found the same job opening that the agency found (listed in the classified ads or on Monster.com) and they sent in my resume so I was not able to apply on my own. If it’s a company that does not want to use the agency and pay their fee you can not go in on your own once they have submitted your information to the company.
If you don’t want to go in, they know you’re not interested. Thank you, have a nice day.
Not all of them require u to show up but since they called, u might just have to go, or else they’ll feel you’re not serious about getting a job. they need to acess u to know if u are fit [physically, intellectually, educational e.t.c] for the company they are going to send u to, their doing their own home work
Hi. I worked in recruitment for a few years. Sure, they wanna see your skills applied in tests etc. but the two main reasons they want to see you have nothing to do with your skills…they have to do with your attributes.
1) Do you present yourself well, cosmetically & with regard to your deportment?
2) How keen are you to work? One of my first big mistakes in recruitment was to send people out to clients sight unseen…only to have them page me at 5am with some bollocks story about car trouble or a sick kid or a sneezing parrot or Workd War 3 in their toilet. Then I’d have the first part of my day screwed by my own lack of attention to detail. An unhappy client and a frantic search for a replacement. When an agency says ‘when can you come in’, tell ‘em that you’ll be there withing the hour if possible. Skills do matter, but they ALWAYS remember the keen ones.
