That’s usually not the best move unless you’re pulling in big numbers. At least that applies for the Navy.

If you are referencing Army Recruiting it COULD be a great move to advance. But you must understand that Army Recruiting is called the Mafia of the Army for a reason. Recruiting should be the BEST job in any service, hey what are you doing but telling people how great your life is and why they should want the same, but recruiting command makes it personal and tires to make your life miserable.

It can be a quick road to E-7 or it can be as fast to mental break down.
Recruiting command is ruthless and unforgiving if you do not produce.

To make it to the most senior NCO ranks, you need to have a “special duty” assignment… which includes either Recruiting or Drill Instructor duty. For those that survive the tour, you have your ticket punched for promotion – and you’ll make E-7 with no problem. If you can’t survive the tour, you will retire as an E-6… IF you make it that far.

Either duty is extremely hard – but necessary to get promoted. Only the ones that aren’t going to survive complain about it.

It will either make or break your career. You need a priority billet
    1.Company Commander aka Drill Instructor.
    2. Recruiting Duty.
    3. Instructor Duty.

And you need to perform well in that billet. Otherwise like the Coast Guard Senior Chief said you wil retire out an E-6 at 20. Everone I knew that made E-7 or above had at least one sucessful tour in a priority billet.
