Title:

Military is job of last resort for unemployed masses

02/15/09 By: DH Williams @ 1:39 PM – EST – Many have accurately predicted that the convergence of an imploding economy, unemployment and secret trillion dollar bailouts would lead to more defense spending and the expansion of the Armed Forces. And they were right because as more people lose their jobs all branches of the military are finding it easier to meet recruitment goals. Source: MSNBC The tough job market is making some jobs a lot easier. As the economy goes down, military recruitment goes up. Its a sellers market, as one Marine recruiter put it, and thats with military action in Iraq and Afghanistan. For a change, the Army doesnt have to go out as much to try to attract recruits because more and more are walking through the door. One recruiting officer noticed that theyre a little older than the norm. About 27, 38, 36 years old, all the way up to almost 40, said Sgt. Jermaine Martin. President Obamas plan to increase the military by 100000 is now possible as military service becomes the job of last resort. Obamas defense department is even recruiting soldiers from what they call temporary immigrants, to give them a shot at citizenship. Using waivers for high school graduation and criminal convictions the Pentagon hopes to recruit 1000 into the US Armed Forces this year.

Basic Recruit Training During 14 weeks (one week is dedicated to arrival procedures and the other 13 weeks to training), the Basic Military Qualification course provide Regular Force recruits with the basic common core skills and knowledge necessary to perform their duties during their career. Basic Training is generally conducted at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School (CFLRS) in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, and its detachment in Borden, Ontario. CFLRS provides initial indoctrination to the rudiments of military knowledge and leadership together with the fundamental ethics and values the characterize the profession of arms.

@947Patriot i nver said it was evil etc, im sorry if sounded rude. but 9/11 was many years ago now and other countries have had mass terrorist attacks too. far more people die each month in the US, just from obeisity related deaths, than died in 9/11. also, while every country should defend itself, doesnt the US do that mainly by being in Other countries? how long can 9/11 continue to be justification for invading other countries? another 10 or 20 years?

however we get certain groups of people angry at us. then they fly 747′s into our largest city. But according to you it is evil and uncivilized to defend ourselves.

@947Patriot true but the US is mostly surrounded by sea with allies caribou in the north and less economically developed south american countries to the south. when was the last time a foreign military set foot in the US? seems like they spend most of their time in other countries!

    September 14th, 2010 at 06:54 | #14

LOL. Countries like Belgium are surronded by allies. Also they don’t do anything to piss the extremists off. Lastly Belgium isn’t nearly as large as the United States. The bigger your country, the more land you have to defend. Also generally the bigger your country is, the more soldiers you can field.

The military isn’t a job of last resort. Peacetime or war. Crappy economy or not, I’ve wanted to join since age 11 and I plan to. These men and woman do the most important job in our society. No other job would be able to exsist without them.

@camhirtle You act as though the troops are a separate species or something. How is a serviceman or woman lesser than you? Don’t you listen to your boss’s orders too or are you a defiant employee? You love families and want them to live, yet you turn on them if they have a military background. Economic disasters, scams, scandals, and more are all caused by civilian politicians like you and I. Have tolerance for different people’s paths in life. Would you disrespect your own kid if he joined?

It seems we always complain that the military takes advantage of a bad economy, but then again, think about times there was no major war: a lot of the 90′s, most of the 80′s, and times when there was a good economy. the military still does recruiting no matter what happens. why are we targeting them for it? what? people on Youtube are so close-minded that they don’t realize the military draws from the American public. that’s right, your friends, family, colleagues. you really hate them?

there are a lot of ignorant comments here. anti-Semites, anti-military, anti-conservative, anti-liberals. my thoughts? the military should tighten the standards. if they accept inherent washouts, then it just hurts their effectiveness if tons of people who go in for the benefits, which is the wrong reason for serving. HELLO!! You SERVE because you consider it your FIRST OPTION, NOT a last option. second of all, why do people still consider the military a dead-end job?? it’s just another path! =)

I was employed, had no criminal record, and could have stayed and kept my job and went to college like all of my friends. Instead, I joined the Air Force to serve my country. So don’t tell me it was a last resort, you dumb biased pieces of shit.

ya but what about the other trillions of dollars spent on useless handout programs? the militry isnt the reason for the economy dropping. 1. its a natural thing. the economy goes up. t WILL come down. 2. one of the main reasons is because insurance companys lowered their standards and gave out loans to people who could not affford to pay them back. then one day they said “shit wheres the money?”

The swimming test – you will drown,…unless you swim.

Not perfect vision? And you want to be a “sniper”? No such division infantryman,…unless you can really shoot,…and don’t drown during basic!

Looks way more fun than my basic, or my father’s, or even grandad (but he really didn’t get any basic for WW I other than a few weeks). The onlt thing I DESPISED about this video was the ending – the guy saying it doesn’t matter how tough you are,….huh? Sure, against a constant artillery barrage you can be a “poof”,…but let’s get down and dirty,…..and let’s pretend I am the enemy,…you die “not so tuff one”. Such is war,..

i want to join, i have had it my head for awhile, i am very interested in world war history and the canadian army…

I am planning to go in 1 and half years. and hopefully get into sniper division, if i hopefully pass this 14 week basic training.

I have respect for everyone, determination to do something i want to.

my flaws i think, is i can’t swim. i don’t know how i will do in the diving with gear on test.

and i don’t have a perfect eye vision, but somehow i have always had good aim. =
