Military Recruitment v. Right of Privacy

default Military Recruitment v. Right of Privacy

ATLANTA Parents, veterans and others told their stories of abusive military recruiting in Georgia high schools at a hearing of the Georgia Senate Veterans, Military and Homeland Security Committee on March 10. The Committee members, chaired by the republican John Douglas (District 17) could not even have a second to the motion of not passing the resolution. The committee at the end of the hearing decided not to take action, but other options are being considered to push Senate Resolution 955, which urges the Georgia Department of Education and Georgia school systems to: • Cease all programs and activities designed to recruit children under the age of 17, as required by US ratification of the Optional Protocol to the Rights of the Child in 2002; • Require written parental consent for participation of children 17 and older in military-related programs and activities; and • Provide students and parents with exemption forms which would prevent schools from disclosing students records to recruiters, as required by the No Child Left Behind Act. A companion resolution, HR1219, has been introduced in the Georgia House. Christopher Raissi is a former Marine recruiter. Recruiters are trained to work everyone in a high school, from freshmen to seniors, said. The schools dont give any notification to the parents about dissemination of students personal information to recruiters. If parents ignore their phone calls, recruiters are trained to track down every kid on the list, either at

This is a short documentary about military recruitment and counter-recruitment in colleges and high schools. The speakers are amateur but the content about the movement is good, and it’s nice and short.

The Ryan PT-22A Recruit was a military training plane, with one seat for the trainee, and one for the instructor. This example in the Smithsonian’s Udvar-Hazy Center dates from 1942.

@reb2550 that so called dumb quote is the fucking truth you moron. in warfare generals still look back at tactics used from past generals. Like Alexander the Great who lived in 300 BC, in the Gulf war a American General used Alexanders tactic of a massive left hook.

The Chinese teachings of the ART OF WAR and true to this very day and are still well taught and learned in military colleges.

“if you do not learn from history it is repeated” Teddy Roosevelt.

also you never made your dumb point.

War is hell… there will always be evil in the world.. and there must be a force of good against it. It’s not pretty it’s just the way it is. You personally don’t have to fight but someone stronger is willing to do it for you.

And I see all the videos on your page deal with the US Army. Well, I am not familiar with the Army, nor do I know anything about their recruiting processes. I have dealt exclusively with the US Marine Corps, both the officer and enlisted recruitment sides of the Marine Corps. And let me tell you one thing, Marine recruiters dont lie, kids who join the Marines do it because Marines pride themselves on their warfighting skills, Marine recruiters dont need to tell lies to recruit people.

So basically you are advocating that militart commericals have images of violence and death being inflicted upon American troops, just to show two sides? I cant say agree with the method, but I do agree with the fact that two sides have to be shown and kids need to know that enlisting involves danger when it comes time to go to war. But lets be serious? If you enlist and dont think that there is any danger involved in serving, you would probably be a good candidate for the Darwin award.

Point being, the benefits of being a civilian are very apparent, people see them everyday, all you need to do is leave your house. The liberal media has the upperhand in this country, a country where kids thake things for granted and have a sense of entitlement. The military keeps the wolf at the gate and enusres people wake up everyday and live the American dream, its a violent business but it has many great benefits, and in our liberlaized country, the miltitary has to be marketed aggresively.

So military recruitment is OK as a one-sided, benefits only message. But this documentary (or any one-sided documentary) is not?

How can you market something that literally surrounds you everyday (civilian life). You see friends going out for drinks and parties every night? stay a civilian. You want to live a danger-free life? stay a civilian. These are everyday things. Its absurd to think “millions of dollars” of taxpayers’ money should be spent on ad campaign for staying a civilian….The military is a very small percentage of Americans.

Scoonie- you make an interesting point about every story having two sides. I wonder if you might give your views on the hundreds of millions of tax dollars used to recruit, advertise and market the military to kids when there is no such “other side” able to reach the same kids with all of the things the ads and the recruiters aren’t telling those same kids. Do you agree that there should be equal funding for recruiting kids to remain civilians and not become soldiers?

and by the way, Im a college student and a Legal studies major, I could go to Law School, and get out and practice law in the private sector making good money….But I made an informed decision and CHOSE to become part of the Marine Officer Program, like many other young men and women I know. WE will end up leading this nation one day. In twenty of thrity years we’ll have either solid miltary careers or have gotten out into political careers like many former miltary leaders ahve done.

Point being, whetehr you make miltary beneifts work for you or not, is UP TO YOU. The beneifts are there, and so is the experience and knowledge of the world around you the miltary gives. Now I have no interest in carrying on conversatons with ignorant people like yourselves, but just anwser the previous question for me; than block me if you want….But think hard and dont spit out anti-wat aundbites and corny anti-war cliches.

And these are a few former Marines doing big things, they all credit the USMC with their success, and this is the Marine Corps alone, the smallest branch of the miltary that churns out success stories like these. So what about them, and the countless other former miltary personnel who’ve found success in life? All I want ot know from you is why dont you ever acknowledge them? and dont say that they are a minority, thats bullshit.

    September 6th, 2010 at 14:47 | #22

shit, the first black female miltary aviator ever is a current Marine Officer. People like Senator James Webb, Trial attorney F. Lee Bailey, Seantor John Glenn, Fredrick Smith CEO of FedEx, the president of Dominos Pizza, Former Cahirman of Wachovia Banks were in the Marine Corps, the smallest branch of the miltary at one point. Even former NY governor George Pataki’s son is a Marine Officer….and he’s a Yale Grad and Fordham Law School student.

    September 6th, 2010 at 14:59 | #23

This is why I dont agree with these “documentaries” you basically give off misinformation that applies to a MINORITY within the miltary and spread it as if its the general consensus. You dont know the first thing about the military; people who join know the consequences. anti-recruitment at colleges? Are you serious? These are grown men and women in college, dont speak for them. I know plenty of women who are Marines and Marine Officers who love their jobs and have no complaints.

A GOOD documentary is one that gets two sides of an issue and is impartial, go talk to people who have learned discipline, and gained a work ethic through the military. People who made successful lives and raised families but credit the military with cleaning up their lives. Of course talk to people who have had bad experiences as well…But get tow sides of an issue, not just a group of people who know NOTHING about the miltary, basically badmouthing them and going unchecked.
