Q&A: Can You See Any Military Recruiter To Enlist or Do You Need To Go To The Closest One To You?

Question by vol_jadzia: Can You See Any Military Recruiter To Enlist or Do You Need To Go To The Closest One To You?
I’m thinking of enlisting with the Air Force or the Navy. I’m not far from the IL-WI border. I’m on the IL side and was thinking of going across the border to a recruiter in Kenosha or Racine instead of one the two Air Force and Navy recruiters near me. Can I do that or do I have to see a recruiter in IL?

You may go to any recruiter you feel most comfortable with.

It depends. If you are going into active duty, then you could go anywhere. If you are becoming a reservist, then you must see one in your town, or the town where your reserve unit will be.
Thanks for volunteering to serve this country!

Normally it does not matter, but for you since you are an IL resident there is a big difference between WI and IL. IL is one of the few states that offers military veterans a completely free college education if they enlist and successfully complete their first enlistment in the military. BUT, you will need to enter the military from the state of IL and return to go to school in IL when you finish your military service for this to happen. If you enter the military from WI you will not get this benefit. This college program is above your GI Bill money also. SO, if you do everything you need to do to get the free college education for the state of IL you will be able to cash in on your GI Bill basically for your monthly living expenses while you are in college. This is an awesome program and if you don’t take advantage of it just because you want to talk to the people in Kenosha you are crazy and apparently have tons of money to pay for stuff while you are in college. I would go talk to your hometown recruiters even if you don’t want to for whatever reason.

OH, and if you are trying to avoid something or the IL MEPS has already decided you are not eligible to enlist in the military your social security number is in the system so you cannot just go to another recruiting district and try to enter from there. I hope this isn’t the case, but I wanted to let you know just in case you are trying to scam something.

Sure you can. Go to the best recruiter you find. They are in competition for you but once you start with one, they others won’t touch you without a real good reason.

There really isn’t a benefit to crossing state lines to enlist though. You could declare you’re a resident of TN or TX if you want and still enlist in WI.

MI doesn’t tax military members. TX and TN doesn’t tax anybody. Neither does FL. But you will need a valid address for wherever you declare your residence to be.

First, Everyone here is WRONG: Let me help: If your still in HS you have to go t6o the one that covers the area your HS is in. If your a graduate or dropped out it doesn’t matter where you go, Wisconsin, Alabama, West Virginia, whatever. But, if your still in HS it is illegal for any other recruiter other than the one that covers your school to speak with you about joining the military.

They really don’t care as long as they can count you for their totals, but they won’t like to drive.
