Q&A: Not Educated in the United States, Military Recruiting?
Question by Mike D.: Not Educated in the United States, Military Recruiting?
I did not graduate from a high school in the United States. I do have my diploma from the country where I did graduate (I am a legal permanent resident, in case you’re wondering and do qualify) and am looking to join as enlisted, not as an officer. I’ve seen posts on here where it appears they even scrutinize certain “types” of high schools here in the US. Just want to get my ducks in a row. Any insight?

As long as you can pass the ASVAB, I wouldn’t worry too much about your high school. Before Bush Jr. when military recruiters had it tough, recruiters would bend over backwards to help the dumbest kids pass the test if they thought they’d make good infantrymen.
Now recruiters can afford to be picky. If you don’t talk to a recruiter, you won’t know if their interest in you is strong enough to outweigh any real or imagined problems you might have.

If you’re not sure if your diploma will be accepted all you have to do is see a recruiter with your diploma. From there, they’ll forward it to their education specialist for evaluation. Depending on the country you’re from, we may or may not accept it. Most countries that have 12-year programs like the US are accepted with no problem.
If you have a diploma, you have a diploma. The US military accepts lawful permanent residents every day. I’m sure you’ll get the most accurate answer from a recruiter. Good luck, and God bless ya for trying to serve your new country!
