Queer Nation Houston – National Coming Out Day 10-11-91
Queer Nation Houston celebrated National Coming Out Day, 1991, with a series of high profile public outings targeting organizations with discriminatory policies toward the LGBTIQ communities. ” We want to go to places where queer people aren’t usually visibly present and remind people that we really are everywhere,” said group member, Jon Bourgault. The day began early Friday morning at Lamar High School where ‘Fine Young Queers’, an affinity group of Queer Nation Houston, passed out ‘IT’S OKAY TO BE GAY’ leaflets to students on their way to school. The leaflets informed teenagers that “If you are gay, you are not alone, and if you are heterosexual, some of your friends are most probably lesbian or gay.” The group then visited a local military recruiting office where they applied to join the army. After stating they were gay, they were denied. At the Harris County Administration Building, the group visited the county clerk’s office to apply for marriage licenses. Since the Texas Family Code expressly prohibits licenses for same-sex couples, the marital hopefuls were rebuked. When the couples began kissing as part of their demonstration, they were asked to leave. Queer Nation Houston’s other targets included the Boy Scouts of America and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Houston. At high noon, the group met at City Hall where they had planned a ‘KISS-IN’ on the front steps. Upon arrival, the group found a religious group already occupying the space performing a ‘GOD-IN’. The Army National Guard
A look into what it means to serve in the Army National Guard and what it means to be a Citizen-Soldier.
