in the early 1980′s, I met “Admiral Al” at a local ‘ice house” beer bar in Clear Lake, Texas which is the NASA area southeast of Houston. it was right after ‘The Right Stuff” had premiered and one of the guys there asked him if he had actually siad “Sounds Dangerous. Count Me In” when he was recruited for the space program.
his response was “No, But I Wish I Had”
and I can also assure you that having flown of carriers during Vietnam that YES Naval Aviators ARE better than “pilots”

I just finished the book “Light this Candle”, the biography of Alan Shepard. He was a cool guy, very complex. He had many talents, during & after the space program he excelled in business & was the first millionaire astronaut.
Alan Shepard is so cool. He was the first American in space on Freedom7 1961; he was the only Mercury Astronaut to walk on the moon on Apollo 14 in 1971. Plus he hit golf balls on the moon. Eat your heart out Tiger Woods!
I don’t get it…. at this time the US Navy has these kind of planes but that airforce guy in the end of the movie (last scene with yeager) is wondering about the NF104. he says: ” what kind of plane is that?”
@matthompson Actually, that would’ve been a Douglas Skyhawk, McDonnell and Douglas hadn’t merged yet!
Alan Shepard never flew A-4Fs XD
My name Jose Jimenez.

it’s one of the GREATEST lines EVER!!!
You could just never tell WHICH Al Shepard you were going to get:
Smilin’ Al, or
The Icy Commander
@apollowoman
You have your facts all fucked up. John Young was the one who did all that.
@Julian24151
McDonnell Douglas A4 Skyhawk.
What plane was he flying ? looks like an f4 but its not
@abstrakealagram Who you talkin’ to dork?
You ever see From the earth to the moon? the apollo 14 episode does one heck of a job capturing Alan Shepard as a person leading up to his mission.

Thanks @apollowoman – I’m the author of “Light This Candle” and I’m glad you enjoyed it. I obviously agree: Shepard was the coolest.
