“Time off” (“After”) – Scenes from the movie

This clip includes scenes from Eytan Fox first film “Time Off”, a short drame about sexual identity in the Israeli Army. It won 1990 Movie of the Year award from the Israeli Film Institute and many international prizes, among them First prize in Munich’s International Student Film Festival. In “Time Off”, a ranking officer in the Israeli army is attracted to one of the recruits under his command and is conflicted to the point of over-compensating. After a number of unexpected events that transpire during a day of military leave in the city of Jerusalem, the recruit is finally on to his commanding officer’s game. In a sublimely clever final scene the officer seizes an opportunity to signal to the recruit how he feels about him. This film gives a possible insight into where the idea for Yossi & Jagger may have originally come from. As with Yossi & Jagger, it leaves the viewer wishing that Fox had explored the relationships in the film in more detail. You are left wanting to know more and that makes this short film all the more enticing.

National Service is the rite of passage for every Singaporean male, transforming boys into men. And basic military training is where it all begins. Just what can you expect on the first day of enlistment? This video attempts to answer that.

    No, I don´t know how to find the song and if Hanoch Re’im sung it himself. But I love it, too. So I made a new video with the two versions of this song in the movie. :-) )

    thanks a lot. do you know how to find this song Yonatan sang in the bus journey to Jerusalem? Does Hanoch Re’im sing as well? It sounds more charming in his innocent smile and his sweet voice.

    really ,this movie is better than yossi and jagger or other films of eyton —-it resembles the old chinese mood of showing emotion ,not that direct but just gives the hint —-it is more charming !

    The song is called “Love Song to the Sea” (in Hebrew: Zemer Ahava La’yam), lyrics by Rephael Eliaz, melody by Sasha Argov.
    In the movie it´s performed by Chava Alberstein. But I read, that it is also performed by Rammi Kleinstein, Gidi Gov and Arik Einstein.

    Hi @DgenerationXfan6191, yes. The flashing green men are open mobilisation alerts. In open mobilisation, the mass media – television, radio, Omni-theatres and cinemas – will be used to inform NSmen that their unit has been mobilised. Code words will be announced, and these NSmen will need to report to their Mobilisation Centres immediately.

    My term in the Singapore army was way back from 2001 to 2003….served 7 years of ICT/Reservist so far….but since i am working as an expat overseas in Vietnam, I shall be deferring from any ICT for next 2 years. =)

    Hi there…nope…Singaporean males have to serve 2 full-time years in National Service, upon which when we enter the work force or university, we are bound to be called back on a annual basis for a period between 1 week to 3 weeks: depending on the schedule…we call this ICT – In Camp Training or Reservist…this runs on a 10-year cycle and after completion of this 10 year cycle, you do not have to return more for any annual training…free as a bird then…

    Hokkien is a Chinese dialect…a dialect commonly used in Taiwan, Malaysia (with exception of capital city KL where the Chinese in Kuala Lumpur speaks Cantonese) and Singapore…one of the many Chinese dialects…

    @commandant529

    Pardon me…my bad for not explaining easier…”Encik” is the malay word for “uncle” or “senior” and in the Singapore army, the encik holds the military rank of either a staff sergeant or master sergeant and an encik is the company’s “chief” sergeant..all sergeants report to him and his rank and position in a company of men is the highest…only commission officers e.g. the lieutenants etc do not have to report to him…the encik is in charge of the welfare of the men…

    @commandant529

    Haha..true!!! Hokkien expletives were so part and parcel of everyday life back then in the NS and i can never forget those Defaulters parades where the encik will shout “left, right, left right” in double quick time and each time we failed to keep track with him, down we go for countless push-ups… :D
